Professor Kim Hyun-jung Hosts the 3rd Advanced X-ray Science Symposium With Sweden’s MAX IV Laboratory
Professor Kim Hyun-jung of the Department of Physics at Sogang University co-hosted the “3rd Advanced X-ray Science Symposium” with the MAX IV Laboratory at Lund University in Sweden from June 3 to 5. The symposium focused on discussions regarding scientific research using diffraction-limited advanced X-rays, with an emphasis on joint Korea-Sweden research. Presentations covered cutting-edge X-ray technologies and the latest research results and trends applied not only in physics but also in materials science, chemistry, life sciences, environmental science, and semiconductors, followed by discussions on future research collaboration and networking strategies. Approximately 50 people attended the symposium, including nine guest speakers from Korea and 17 from Sweden. From Sogang University, Professor Kim Hyun-jung, along with Professor Shin Hee-jong of the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and Dr. Yoon Kyu-seok of the Center for Ultrafast Phase Transformation, attended the symposium and delivered guest lectures.
In addition, multifaceted discussions took place regarding the construction of the Korea Light Source (4th-generation circular synchrotron light source), currently under construction in Ochang, North Chungcheong Province, and cooperation strategies for the future utilization of the light source. Furthermore, both sides engaged in extensive discussions on various research topics and concrete plans for collaboration between Korea and Sweden in the fields of cutting-edge basic science and synchrotron light sources.
This symposium was held with support from the Korea-Nordics Science & Technology Cooperation Center (Director: Park Hee-woong) under the Ministry of Science and ICT as the 27th LINC workshop.
Professor Kim Hyun-jung stated, “Hosting a joint symposium with MAX IV laboratory at Lund University in Sweden—a cutting-edge scientific facility that has attracted global attention—and fostering cooperation will not only provide our researchers with an opportunity for a new leap forward but will also greatly contribute to achieving creative and innovative research outcomes.” She added, “I believe that this collaboration will serve as a catalyst for Sogang University and MAX IV—and, by extension, Korea and Sweden—to jointly drive the advancement of synchrotron radiation and cutting-edge X-ray utilization technologies, broaden the horizons of basic science, and work together to find solutions for a sustainable future for humanity.”
