Professor Cheong Hyeon-sik’s Research Team Publishes Paper in World-Renowned Journal ‘Reviews of Modern Physics’
Research results in which Professor Cheong Hyeon-sik of the Department of Physics participated as a co-author were recently published in 'Reviews of Modern Physics' (RMP), the world’s most prestigious journal in the field of physics. RMP is an invitation-based review journal published by the American Physical Society (APS) and is regarded as the most influential journal across all fields of physics.
Recently, two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials have garnered attention for their novel quantum properties and potential applications, rapidly emerging as a core research area in condensed matter physics. Since 2016, when Professor Cheong’s team first reported the experimental verification of an atomically thin antiferromagnetic vdW insulator, the field has rapidly expanded with the successive discovery of various 2D magnetic materials. This review paper comprehensively summarizes the major achievements of the past decade, covering historical background, material classification, theoretical analysis, spectroscopic and dynamical properties, spintronics applications, and future prospects.
The paper broadly covers various analytical results reported to date, systematically presenting recent trends in 2D vdW magnetic material research. Furthermore, it introduces various attempts and achievements in applying these materials, such as in spintronic devices, and is expected to serve as a landmark reference in the field. In this study, Professor Cheong Hyeon-sik, in collaboration with Professor Kim Jae-hoon of Yonsei University, was responsible for the spectroscopic analysis section. They introduced research techniques widely used in 2D vdW studies, including second-harmonic generation, Raman spectroscopy, the magneto-optical Kerr effect, terahertz spectroscopy, and optical absorption spectroscopy.
RMP is an invitation-based review journal featuring a structure in which leading researchers in the field write articles at the request of the international academic community, including the publication of Nobel lectures by the previous year’s Nobel laureates in Physics. The inclusion of co-authors also signifies that they are carefully selected experts in the field who have earned international recognition.
The University expects this achievement to elevate the international standing of domestic researchers, serve as a significant catalyst for expanding international collaborative research, and lay the groundwork for future research in the field of condensed matter physics.
