초록
The present study investigates how South Koreans perceive climate change and how they intend to respond to the global crisis. Drawing on the risk perception attitude framework, our study employs two dimensions(i.e., risk perception and collective efficacy) to classify the general public in South Korea into four different groups: 1) responsive (high risk*high efficacy), 2) avoidance (high risk*low efficacy), 3) proactive (low risk*high efficacy), and 4) indifferent (low risk*low efficacy). Also, the study examines how the four different groups use news media and how strong their intentions toward civic engagement. A total of 716 survey responses were analyzed through discriminant function analysis. The analysis found the three different types of public including responsive, proactive, and indifferent. Further, the results revealed that responsive group scored significantly higher than those in the other groups regarding news media use, selective exposure to news, and news literacy. However, the three groups did not significantly differ in terms of civic engagement intention, which implies that high risk perception and collective efficacy are not directly associated with civic engagement intention. Overall, the present study offers both theoretical and practical implications for not only explaining the relationships among public types, news media use, and civic participation, but also tailoring message strategies to each type of public.
