Alyssum: An Augmented Reality-based Interactive Art Reflecting through the Phytoremediation Metaphor

This study explores the recovery of human senses and the visualization of the mind through Alyssum, an experiential work that integrates video and augmented reality (AR), using the process of phytoremediation as its central metaphor. Beginning from the condition of contemporary individuals who lose their unique senses within the uniformity and repetition of social structures, Alyssum visualizes a process in which participants reflect inwardly and engage with their environment through bodily movement. Users interact via a camera with a virtual metal object that symbolizes the mind. Participants begin by inscribing traces onto the metal surface, expressing internal states and initiating a process of introspection. As they continue, bringing their hands together leads to the visual emergence of a new sprout, marking a shift toward sensory restoration. By applying the ecological principle of phytoremediation to interactive art, Alyssum creates a space for contemplating the relationship between humans and nature and seeks to construct a reflective narrative through active user participation. © 2025 IEEE.
