The Burdens of Proximity in A New Sentimental Journey

This article examines the relationship between modern tourism and masculine self-fashioning in Charles Allston Collins’s A New Sentimental Journey, a travel narrative based loosely on Laurence Sterne’s classic eighteenth-century novel. Rather than imagining travel to France as a form of gentlemanly politeness, sociability, or cultural capital associated with Sterne’s novel and the eighteenth-century institution of the Grand Tour, Collins redefines the notion of a sentimental journey in terms of speed, proximity, and alienation at the heart of the modern metropolis. The article concludes by reconsidering the travel anxieties represented in Collins’s narrative in relation to the humanitarian plot of A Tale of Two Cities, published serially alongside Collins’s book in All the Year Round, to reconsider the figure of the modern tourist and the logic of anti-tourism in Dickens’s historical novel.
