Portable plasmonic heating device for digital polymerase chain reaction

Digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) is able to detect and quantify small quantities of DNA while not requiring calibration experiments. Here we show a portable device for conducting dPCR experiments with a power consumption of 10W. Through plasmonic heating by four high power LEDs heating rates of 10°C/s can be achieved. Cooling is done by a small cooling fan, resulting in similar cooling rates. The dPCR sample is prepared in a PMMA microwell array, which is afterwards sealed using adhesive tape. The small size, low power consumption, and simple sample preparation make the device suitable for point of care scenarios. Copyright © (2018) by Chemical and Biological Microsystems Society.
