A Linguistic Study on Beatification Trial Records on the Martyrs of the Kihay and Pyengo Persecutions

초록

The Beatification Trial Records on the Martyrs of the Kihay and Pyengo Persecutions provide official documentation of the beatification process for martyrs from the Kihay (1839) and Pyengo (1846) persecutions. Submitted to the Holy See, these records were instrumental in the canonization process. The trials were conducted in Seoul from March 18, 1883, to January 27, 1885 (sessions 2-86) and from September 17, 1885, to April 2, 1887 (sessions 88-102), under the oversight of delegated judges Father Mutel and Father Poisnel, with Father Robert serving as the notary. Sessions 87, 103, 104, and 105 address the transition of judges and document management. Testimonies from 42 witnesses regarding 82 martyrs were recorded across 100 sessions. This collection of five volumes is mainly in Korean, but Latin is used in priests’ signatures and oaths, and some passages include Chinese characters. The manuscript clearly details recording dates and scribes, incorporating some classical translation expressions, yet it is mainly characterized by natural, detailed narratives of actual events. Analyzing its orthography, phonology, grammar, and vocabulary reveals significant developments in Modern Korean. This makes the manuscript a valuable resource for understanding late 19thcentury linguistic changes, underscoring its importance in Korean linguistic studies.
