오수나의 프란치스코의 거둠(recogimiento)의 신비주의: 거둠의 신비 해석학의 발생과 서구 중세 신비 사상사적 맥락

Francisco de Osuna, a member of the Franciscan Observant Movement, was the first to codify the mysticism of recollection (recogimiento) in his Tercer Abecedario Espiritual in the first half of sixteenth-century Spain. Shaped by the influence of northern European mystical writings, Osuna reinterpreted the medieval Western monastic and mystical tradition -above all through the concepts of recollection and silence- to develop a new style of mystical hermeneutics. Historical research on the mysticism of recollection, however, has largely neglected the fact that the Scala Paradisi of John Climacus, a classic of Eastern Hesychast spirituality, was highly valued among the Franciscan Observants, the milieu in which the mysticism of recollection first took form. This study seeks to fill that gap by examining two works especially likely to have influenced Osuna’s mystical hermeneutics: Hendrik Herp’s Directorium aureum contemplativorum and Climacus’s Scala Paradisi. Through comparative literary analysis, this study affirms the likelihood that both Herp’s Directorium aureum contemplativorum and Climacus’s Scala Paradisi shaped the emergence of Osuna’s mystical hermeneutics of the mysticism of recollection in the Tercer Abecedario Espiritual. In this work, which inherits the affective Dionysianism that became the dominant mode of Western mysticism from the thirteenth century onward,Osuna enters into dialogue with Western mysticism of introversion, mediated through Herp’s Directorium aureum contemplativorum. At the same time, he reinterprets medieval mystical traditions by placing recollection and silence at the center of his theology, while deepening his understanding of the significance of silence through the Hesychast tradition as transmitted in Climacus’s Scala Paradisi. Through this historical examination, this study further enhances our understanding of the context of Western medieval mystical thought in which Osuna’s particular style of mystical hermeneutics was formed and, in particular, the concept of ‘silence of understanding’(acallar de entendimiento) emerged.
