Hydrogen sensors based on electrochromic oxide thin films have attracted much attention recently, since this type of sensor enables optical remote sensing. Electrochromic oxides, when combined with a thin overlayer of palladium, exhibit gasochromic properties, and change color when exposed to hydrogen gas; by monitoring the changes in optical transmission, one can detect the presence of hydrogen. Since the gasochromic process is essentially equivalent to the electrochromic process in that the change in color results from insertion/extraction of protons and electrons, we leverage previous Raman studies on electrochromic thin films in our investigation of gasochromic thin films. We study the electrochromic properties of hydrated amorphous ruthenium oxide thin films by using in-situ Raman spectroscopy during electrochemical charging/discharging cycles and compare, the results with the changes in the Raman spectra of a gasochromic Pd/RuO2 film as it is exposed to hydrogen gas.
