Political Learning of Democratic Support in Context

Scholars in the cultural approach to democratization have proposed different learning models of democratic support. Whereas many scholars emphasize the cognitive capacity of individual citizens, equally many focus on the cultural or political institutional environment in which they live. Yet these scholars have made little effort to integrate individual and contextual factors into a single model capable of unraveling the interactions among those factors. This study proposes such a contextual interaction model of democratic political learning and tests it with the fifth wave of the World Values Survey conducted in every region of the world. The multilevel analysis of the Survey provides credible evidence that citizen support for democracy is a product of contextual interactions between the capacity of individual citizens to learn and the environment in which they learn and experience politics.
