A Node-Based Visualization Tool for Learning Synthetic Fragrance Ingredients

Understanding the characteristics and structures of fragrance components is challenging for beginners, as complex chemical names and abstract olfactory expressions often hinder learning. To address this issue, this study developed an interactive learning tool that visualizes 100 synthetic fragrance compounds in a node-based graph. Each node represents a fragrance component, colored by its primary scent note and scaled by its duration. When a node is selected, users can explore detailed information and AI-generated sensory images, while components of the same note family are clustered to enable intuitive visual exploration. A user study with three participant groups-perfumers, fragrance learners, and UI/UX experts-showed that the tool enhanced structural understanding, visual engagement, and motivation through sensory associations. Based on the evaluation, the system was refined with a hub-centered layout, consistent spacing, and feedback enhancements, improving visual clarity and operational stability. The results demonstrate the potential of integrating visualization, interaction, and sensory imagery to create a multimodal, HCI-based learning experience for fragrance education.
