This paper aims to explain the optionality of the Korean genitive marker 'uy'. In this paper, we adopt the KP analysis assuming that 'uy' head of genitive phrases in Korean is K. And we propose that the Korean language has another genitive marker which has no phonetic form. Showing that 'uy' and 'ø' type genitives are comparable, respectively, to English '-'s' and 'of -' type genitives, we claim that 'uy' marks 'structural Case', and 'ø' 'inherent Case'. We conclude the optionality of 'uy' does not result from N to N Incorporation as advanced by Hong (1994), but from the co-existence of two genitive markers in Korean.
