초록
The current study explored what drive people to take climate action. To answer the question, we relied on two pillars of climate action strategies (i.e., mitigation and adaptation) and two levels of support (i.e., individual level and policy level) and proposed multi-level climate engagement. To be specific, this study categorized climate engagement into four distinct types - mitigation action, adaptation action, mitigation policy support, and adaptation policy support - and empirically examined the influences of distal factors and proximal factors based on the framework of the Theory of Triadic Influence (TTI). A online survey was conducted from mid August to late August 2025. The target population for this study was South Korean adults aged between 20 and 69. A total of 500 online panels participated in the survey. We used a quota sampling method to ensure an equal proportion by gender and age. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted to test the proposed hypotheses. The results indicated that two antecedents(i.e., perceived reality of climate change, and perceived current harm from climate change) were positively associated with individual action for mitigation. Also, the results revealed that individual action for adaptation was found to be positively associated with environmental self-identity and climate change concern. Moreover, policy support for mitigation was found to be positively associated with environmental self-identity, progressive political ideology, perceived reality of climate change, climate change concern. Lastly, the results showed that policy support for adaptation was found to be positively associated with environmental self-identity, progressive political ideology, perceived reality of climate change, perceived current harm from climate change, climate change concern. The study offers theoretical insight by exploring climate action on a multi-level basis within the Korean context. The findings from our study will help media facilitate citizens’ engagement with collective climate action.
