This study examined the mediating effects of selfobject needs as measured in craving and avoidance and self-criticism in the relationship between narcissistic vulnerability and social avoidance and distress. Data collected from self-report surveys of adult men and women aged 20 and older(N=342) in the Seoul metropolitan area were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 and Mplus. Results are as follows. Selfobject craving and self-criticism each significantly mediated the relationship between narcissistic vulnerability and social avoidance and distress. In addition, narcissistic vulnerability significantly predicted selfobject needs and self-criticism. Selfobject craving showed a significant direct effect in reducing social avoidance and distress, but its indirect effect was not significant. In contrast, selfobject avoidance showed a sequential mediating effect, increasing social avoidance and discomfort through self-criticism. Current findings suggest the dynamic interaction between internal needs and self-evaluative cognition in the manifestation of interpersonal maladjustment. This study provides useful empirical data for understanding narcissistic interpersonal dynamics and calls for counseling and therapeutic interventions specific to clients’ self-object needs and self-criticism in clinical settings. Finally, strength and limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are discussed.
