Efficient mechanochemical synthesis of high-performance NiPd alloy nanoparticle catalysts on graphene

Transition metal-noble metal bimetallic alloy nanocatalysts are widely utilized in various catalytic reactions due to their outstanding performance and cost efficiency. However, methods for synthesizing bimetallic alloy particles with clean surfaces are not extensively reported. In this study, we propose a cost-effective synthesis method for nickel-palladium (NiPd) bimetallic nanocatalysts supported on graphene (NiPd/G) that achieves uniform structures and exceptional catalytic performance through automated catalyst synthesis equipment. The solidstate mechanochemical synthesis method employed in this work enables precise control of the metal molar ratios, leading to the formation of highly dispersed nanoparticles with clean surfaces. The synthesized NiPd/G catalyst exhibited significantly higher catalytic performance in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol compared to a commercial Pd/C catalyst, demonstrating notably superior Pd activity. Additionally, by adjusting the mixing ratios of Ni and Pd, various NiPd/G alloy catalysts with different compositions were synthesized using the same method and evaluated, enabling the identification of performance variations based on alloy composition.
