Hermeneutics as Horizon of Being: Centering on Hermeneutics of E. Coreth
  • 박병준

초록

Since the insight of Husserl who argued that all of our experiences are based on our own intrinsic empirical horizon, the concept of ‘horizon’had been accepted by Heidegger and Gadamer and has settled as the core concept of philosophical hermeneutics to clarify the nature and structure of understanding. The question on the horizon of understanding is one of the important questions of hermeneutics that is inseparably related with the question of the nature and origin of understanding in hermeneutics. This study aims to explore the ‘hermeneutics as horizon of being’ by Coreth who, more than anyone else, tried to clarify the ultimate horizon of understanding with his theory on horizon of being. Being is the ultimate condition that leads understanding from the very beginning. Without being, understanding of the world is not possible. The total and basic horizon of understanding is the unconditional and unlimited horizon of being. Being is the metaphysical grounds for all things and it is also the basic condition of hermeneutical understanding that opens up the understanding itself. Because understanding is not possible without the concept of ‘being’in metaphysics, the ‘horizon of being’ is the ultimate basis in the hermeneutical horizon that makes all understanding possible. From this point of view, we would be able to say that ‘being’ leads us to the world of ‘understanding’. However, the ground where we can understand and analyze the concept of ‘being’ through individual experiences is nothing else but the empirical world with our historic and linguistic experiences; for the ground of ‘mediated immediacy’ of being is the world. The world transcends self-understanding within the totality of ontological meaning, for our understanding of the world based on limitless and uncondtional being is continuously opening up to ontological understanding. If being becomes the ground for our understanding of historical and linguistic experiences,we should ultimately be able to analyze such a world of understanding and all phenomena of the world within such an ontological meaning. Even if the ground where our understanding takes place is the world, ‘understanding’ always precedes ‘being’ that is the basis of ‘understanding’. Therefore, the ‘hermeneutics as horizon of being’ by Coreth could be explained as ‘hermeneutics of transcendence’, which means, ‘transcending the world while existing within it.’
