The Mediating Effect of Hopelessness and the Moderated Mediating Effect of Mental Well-Being in the Relationship Between Loneliness and Life Satisfaction Among Young Single-Person Households

초록

This study aimed to examine the mediating role of hopelessness in the relationship between loneliness and life satisfaction among young single-person households, based on the diathesis–stress model, and to analyze whether this mediating process varies by levels of mental well-being, grounded in the mental health model. Data were collected from 118 young adults living alone across Korea, and a moderated mediation analysis was conducted. The results were as follows: first, loneliness had a significant positive effect on hopelessness, but did not have a direct significant effect on life satisfaction. Second, hopelessness fully mediated the relationship between loneliness and life satisfaction. Third, mental well-being moderated the mediating effect of hopelessness, indicating a significant moderated mediation effect. These findings support both the diathesis–stress model and the mental health model, contributing to a deeper theoretical understanding of the psychological processes influencing life satisfaction among young single-person households.
