초록

This paper studies the information structure and associated intonation patterns of the conjoined sentences with the suffix -ko in Korean. The results of a perception experiment show that the intonation of [H(/)L] is the most appropriate for temporal sequence 1, duration, reason and reverse order. Here, the focus is on the first conjunct, projecting the [foreground/background] information structure of the entire sentence. For sentences with temporal sequence 2, [L(/)H] is judged the most fitting: a new intonation unit seems to form in the second conjunct. Meanwhile, two juxtaposed conjuncts have the same intonation ([LH/LH]) owing to the same thematic structure in each conjunct. It is shown that the intonation of the sentences with -ko is affected by their polysemy, syntactic structures, thematic structures and focus.
