Letter Transposition Effect in the Korean Multi-Syllabic Word

초록

This study was conducted to investigate whether the absence of the letter transposition effect in Korean word recognition is maintained in three syllabic words. The absence of the letter transposition effect in existing two syllabic words was because of easily detectable situations where a significant portion of the spellings of the words deviated from the position. On the other hand, in this study, only two spellings were exchanged among the nine spellings constituting the three syllables. A primed lexical decision task was performed with identical, transposed, and replaced control conditions. Experimental results showed that the identical condition of the long word masked priming task showed a significant priming effect compared to other conditions, but the letter transposed condition performed similar to the letter replaced control condition. This implies that the Korean letters are processed position specific, and the English language model does not apply to the processing of Korean.
