AI 시대의 도래와 교회의 미래: AI의 현실에 관한 분석과 교회에 끼칠 영향 진단

초록

AI has become a very big topic in our society to the extent that the current era we live in can be called the ‘AI era’ in a word. With the advent of this AI era, It is time to accurately diagnose how big and serious the impact it will have on our society and the Church. Therefore, I give a preferential description of the definition and advantages of AI in this paper: AI stands for ‘software (and computer system including it) that artificially embody human learning and intelligence’. Such an AI is much faster and more accurate than humans in repetitive learning because it has a stable memory with a much faster calculation speed than humans. The outstanding intelligence by such AI’s ability of repetitive learning is the most important concept that defines AI and its greatest strength. AI has the ability to make rational judgments properly through memory and intelligence. However, there are also clear limitations that AI does not have when compared to humans: First of all, AI definitely has no will. There is no way an AI with no will could have a free and spontaneous intellectual curiosity and the ability to raise questions. AI cannot have emotions. AI does not have the ability to judge whether the content of knowledge it has received through repetition learning is correct or not. Nor does it appear to have the ability to judge moral/ethical situations. In addition, many experts are currently debating whether AI can accept, judge, and understand common sense. In the field of religion, AI has clear limitations. AI has no ability to discern between good and evil. No matter how much AI learns about the suffering and death of human life, it is unlikely that it will lead to religious experiences through learning. And AI with no will cannot proceed with an act of faith. In the case of the Catholic Church, there seem to be several areas where AI can be applied directly. Except for such exceptions, however, AI is unlikely to be used in the Church, and concerns about whether AI will fundamentally change the Church will not be taken seriously. Nevertheless, the Church must take the advent of the AI era seriously. Humanity living in the AI era will be living in an era where their life of faith and religious beliefs are challenged. Moreover they may be living under the influence of atheism. In particular, even in the AI era, the Church must emphasize that humans still have their own ‘souls’, and only then can the Church maintain its position in that era.
