The Moderating Effect of Social Unrest on the Relationship between Hopelessness and Stock Investment in Youth

초록

This study focuses on the relationship between hopelessness and stock investment based on the expected utility theory and the moderating effect of social unrest based on the rational choice theory, considering that youth stock investment shares similar characteristics with gambling addiction. To this end, hierarchical regression analysis and bootstrap were conducted with 515 youth. The results show that, first, youth’s perceived hopelessness increases stock investment. second, youth’s perceived social unrest decreases stock investment. Third, social unrest had a moderating effect on the relationship between youth’s perceived hopelessness and stock investment. These results suggest that investing in stocks may be seen as a fair way to plan for the future, but it may not be the right option in situations where social problems or high risk are involved. Based on these findings, it is suggested that in order to prevent youth from investing in stocks imprudently, it is necessary to provide them with quality jobs and financial education at an early age.
