For several decades, the media and North Korea have formed an important yet awkward combination. The media has served as the primary conduit between North Korea and the outside world, providing rare but valuable glimpses into the isolated regime. This self-imposed and enforced isolation of the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) regime resulted in an utter dearth of media content - be it news, films, television, or music - that offered meaningful insights into the regime. Similarly, North Koreans were restricted to a limited selection of state-produced or approved films, songs, and news stories. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Seungahn Nah, Soomin Seo, Yong Chan Kim and Dal Yong Jin.
