초록
This study aimed to examine, from the perspective of the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model, how habitual short-form use during working hours affects job engagement among office workers. Recently, short-form has rapidly spread by encouraging repeated consumption through key functions such as recommendation algorithms, infinite scrolling, and short video length. However, the effects of such use on job-related attitudes and behaviors during working hours have not been sufficiently examined. Accordingly, this study set short video length, recommendation algorithms, and infinite scrolling as the stimulus (S); habitual use, reduced attention, and perceived stress as the organism (O); and job engagement as the response (R), and analyzed the relationships among these variables. The participants were 302 office workers who had experience using short-form during working hours, and the data collected through an online survey were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results showed that, only the perceived importance of recommendation algorithms and infinite scrolling had a significant positive effect on habitual use among the major functions of short-form, whereas the perceived importance of short video length did not have a significant effect. This suggests that habitual short-form use may be more closely associated not with short length itself, but with recommendation algorithms and infinite scrolling. In addition, habitual use had a directly negative effect on job engagement, while at the same time it had a positive effect on decreased attention, and decreased attention in turn had a positive effect on job engagement, confirming an inconsistent mediation effect. These findings suggest that although short-form use during working hours may generally interfere with job engagement, job engagement may in some cases be strengthened when workers become aware of temporary declines in attention and subsequently re-focus on their tasks or recover self-regulation. In contrast, perceived stress did not have a significant effect on job engagement, and its mediating effect was also not significant. Taken together, the findings indicate that short-form use during working hours cannot be regarded as uniformly negative; rather, the pathways through which it affects job engagement may vary in complex ways depending on users’ perceived importance of key short-form functions and the cognitive and psychological responses that emerge during use. This study is also meaningful in that it treats short-form not simply as a leisure medium, but as a digital medium used during work, and empirically examines how its effects are connected to workplace behavior within organizations. In particular, it has theoretical and practical significance in that it analyzes habitual short-form use in an organizational context and broadens the understanding of the relationship between short-form use and job engagement.
