초록
This study focuses on the possibility that the relationship between ideology and policy preferences varies depending on the subjective importance voters assign to each issue. To examine this, the study analyzes survey data and measures the distance between self-reported ideological orientation and policy preferences regarding inter-Korean relations, women’s rights, corporate regulation, and income inequality. The results show that although the correlations between ideological orientation and policy preferences are statistically significant, their overall strength is relatively weak. In addition, the effect of subjective issue importance does not simply reinforce either consistency or inconsistency in a uniform manner; rather, it varies conditionally depending on party support and ideological intensity. In particular, among supporters of the Democratic Party, as ideological intensity increases, subjective issue importance tends to reduce the distance between ideological orientation and policy preferences. By contrast, among supporters of the People Power Party, in some policy areas, higher ideological intensity is associated with a tendency for issue importance to increase the distance between the two. These findings suggest that the effect of subjective issue importance is conditioned not only by individuals’ level of information processing, but also by the ideological coherence and identity structure of each party’s support base.
