초록

This study elucidates the mode of being Church and the style of evangelization that Francis has embodied and promoted throughout his pontificate in response to the demands of the contemporary world. Francis has emerged as a proclaimer of the Gospel who realizes a persuasive and compelling evangelization style long sought by the Catholic Church today, demonstrating with genuine credibility, a form of Christian life and ecclesial existence capable of engaging people in the modern world. This study argues in detail that the evangelization style of the synodal, missionary-pastoral Church -as embodied and articulated by Francis- is, above all, an incarnational gesture of the mercy of the Triune God, to be manifested in the following of Christ the Good Samaritan. To this end, this study examines the teachings found in his first apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, understood as an interpretive key to the Francis’s distinctive missionary-pastoral praxis, alongside documents -homilies, addresses, and interviews- produced during his tenure as Archbishop of Buenos Aires. This study first demonstrates that the spiritual profile of the missionary- pastoral Church proposed by Francis mirrors his own spiritual profile, which may be characterized as a synthesis of three Trinitarian virtues: mercy, humility, and joy. This spiritual profile is identified as both the animating spirit and the generative source of the Pope’s attractive and effective evangelization style. This study further reveals that this style-which Francis both embodied in his own life and consistently emphasized in his teaching- consists in the missionary-pastoral Church’s following of Christ the Good Samaritan, whose constitutive core is the incarnational gesture of the mercy of the Triune God.
