Female Adolescents’ Eating Disorder Risk and Attitudes toward Appearance-Oriented Instagram Influencers A Serial Mediation Model of Thin-Ideal Internalization and Body Dissatisfaction

초록

This study examines how attitudes toward appearance-focused influencers affect the risk of eating disorders, with a particular focus on the mediating roles of thin-ideal internalization and body dissatisfaction. An online survey was conducted among Korean adolescent girls (N = 300), and a serial mediation model was tested using PROCESS Macro Model 87. The findings demonstrated a significant pathway in which favorable attitudes toward appearance-focused influencers on Instagram increased the risk of eating disorders by sequentially enhancing thin-ideal internalization and body dissatisfaction. However, the hypothesized moderated mediation effect of self-esteem was not supported. This study proposes the practical potential of a positive psychology-based functionality appreciation writing intervention, which focuses on body functionality, to attenuate appearance -focused body perceptions and to enhance positive body image. Overall, this study contributes both theoretically and practically by identifying the psychological mechanism underlying eating disorder risk among Korean adolescent girls and suggesting a functionality-focused intervention as a promising pathway for prevention.
