Lexical Characteristics of Texts from Korean Language Textbooks Across Proficiency Levels: Diversity, Density, and Vocabulary Level.

초록

This study investigates the lexical characteristics of reading texts across six distinct series of Korean language textbooks published by universities, aiming to provide a robust foundation for designing and evaluating texts tailored to learners’ proficiency levels. Three key lexical features—lexical diversity, lexical density, and vocabulary levels—are examined in depth. The findings reveal that lexical diversity serves as a strong indicator for distinguishing text levels, with both RTTR and CTTR consistently increasing in parallel with proficiency levels. In contrast, lexical density is found to be more dependent on genre and text style rather than proficiency levels, with informational texts demonstrating higher density compared to narrative or conversational texts. Vocabulary level analysis shows that lower-level texts predominantly rely on basic-level vocabulary, while higher-level texts exhibit a more balanced distribution, offering increased complexity and variety. This study systematically analyzes textbook lexical features, offering valuable insights into readability and the development of level-appropriate reading materials.
