The Syntagmatic Unit of Korean Ending

초록

Lee, Chung-Hoon. 2007. 11. The Syntagmatic Unit of Korean Ending. Korean Linguistics 37, 149-179. The aim of this paper is to clarify the syntagmatic units of Korean endings. The main points can be summarized as followings. First, endings merge with other linguistic objects on the basis of complement feature. Second, there is systematic redundancy in endings’ complement feature and the systematic redundancy can be captured by complement selecting rule. Third, endings can merge with VP or Vo. When endings merge with VP, the inflected word or inflectional form of lexeme is produced by head movement which is applied to bound forms. Fourth, the evidences for concatenating ending and Vo are such as these : ‘V-ko V’ constructions, ‘V-ke’ constructions, and ‘V-eo V’ constructions. Finally, ending and Vo concatenation can give some new perspective to the understanding of auxiliary verb constructions and word formation among others.
