夷之는 二本인가?: 『맹자』 「등문공상」 5장을 중심으로
Does Yi Chih have two roots?- With the focus on 3A5 of Mencius
초록
The aim of this paper is to show that Kwong-loi Shun (or David S. Nivison) has failed to provide a clear explanation why Mencius had criticized Yi Chih as having two roots in 3A5 of Mencius even though his interpretation was more persuasive than the other traditional ones. While the traditional interpretations have taken root as a biological origin, Shun/Nivison viewed root as a mind in order to make up the insufficiencies of them. In my interpretation, Shun's failure results from his imprecise definition of root which makes Yi Chih also describable as having one root.
