초록

This study aims to investigate the constituents, attributes, and hierarchical configurations of descriptors related to ‘Mediating a Text’ and explore their implications for the domain of Korean language education, with a particular focus on the mediation activities in the Common European Framework for Language (CEFR). ‘Mediating a Text’ constitutes a pivotal realm within CEFR’s mediation activities, alongside ‘Mediating Concepts’ and ‘Mediating Communication’ holding a significant position due to its preservation of the core attributes of mediation. Consequently, our analysis reveals the following insights into the subcategories and constituents that encompass ‘Mediating a Text’: Firstly, ‘Mediating a Text’ is categorized into ‘Relaying Specific Information, Explaining Data, Processing Text, Translating Text, Note-Taking, Expressing Personal Responses to Creative Texts, and Analyzing and Critiquing Creative Texts.’ The characteristics of these components vary contingent upon the purpose of mediation, the mediated text, and the modality of language used. Secondly, descriptors of ‘Mediating a Text’ are structured around three core components: ① the act of mediation, ② the mediated text, and ③ the conditions of mediating. ② The mediated text further comprises sub-components representing ‘Text Type/Genre, Structural Characteristics, Subject, and Linguistic Attributes,’ while ③ the conditions of mediating encompass specific factors such as ‘Situation and Context, Language Proficiency, Constraints, and Resource Utilization.’ Thirdly, ‘Relaying Specific Information’ entails the extraction and transmission of specified details, ‘Explaining Data’ involves mediating information presented in charts, graphs, images, and other visual formats, ‘Processing Text’ encompasses the summarization and reconstruction of information and arguments within the original text, ‘Translating Text’ involves the translation of information, meaning, and nuances, ‘Note-Taking’ serves the purpose of creating notes based on the information within the original text, ‘Expressing a Personal Response to Creative Texts’ and ‘Analyzing and Critiquing Creative Texts’ involve responding to creative texts with imaginative and culturally significant interpretations and conducting critical analysis. Drawing from the distinctive attributes of each subcategory, hierarchical structures, and characteristics of descriptors related to ‘Mediating a Text’ are designed to align with learners’ proficiency levels. In conclusion, based on the analysis of the components and features of ‘Mediating a Text,’ this study delves into the issues surrounding the composition and application of ‘Mediating a Text’ concerning the ‘expansion of the mediation concept and domain,’ the ‘multi-modality of mediated text,’ and the ‘hierarchical organization of descriptors for mediating a text.’
