ANTITHETICALITIES?: being-human in the era of cannibalism, zombification, sundry other monstrosities

Our contemporary historical moment has been characterized by theorists as not only performing a mode of cannibalistic capitalism (Nancy Fraser) but, within emergent digital structures, constituents are said to experience zombifying, neuronally violent information overload (Byung-Chul Han). In an era in which the biosphere attempts to communicate increasingly grim planetary directives, this fictocritical paper thinks toward possible modes of ethical response, and reads Juliana Spahr’s exemplary book, That Winter the Wolf Came (2015), as raising possibilities for new affectivities, new connections, indeed new socialities. Surveying not only a suite of texts but also social contexts, this paper understands global precarities to be a symptom of anthropometric thinking, and asks, in an era of digital structures emerging onto scenes of ecological collapse: what are we allowing to happen?. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
