KF•B(OH)3: a KBBF-type material with large birefringence and remarkable deep-ultraviolet transparency

A designed material with large birefringence and remarkable deep-ultraviolet transparency, KF center dot B(OH)(3), has been discovered. The well-aligned [F center dot B(OH)(3)](-) layers endow a very large bandgap (7.63 eV), comparably large birefringence (0.114 @1064 nm), and the reinforced interlayer bonding of ca. 2.16 x KBe2BO3F2.
