Thin porous carbon membranes were fabricated by carbonization of porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membranes prepared via crystallization-induced phase separation using dimethyl sulfone (DMSO2). PAN/DMSO2 thin films spin-coated on a substrate were baked at 120 degrees C for 1 h to remove the remaining solvent and DMSO2. The prepared porous PAN membranes were heat-treated in two-steps: stabilization and carbonization. The carbonized membranes were found to have tubularand sheet-like pores. Raman and XRD results revealed that graphitic structures were formed by carbonization of the stabilized PAN membranes. The porous carbon membranes showed a high electrical conductivity of 2.4x10(2) S/cm.
