Preparation of Polyacrylonitrile/Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite-Derived Carbon Microstructures by Ion Beam Patterning and Post-Pyrolysis

In this study, the preparation of carbon microstructures (CMs) from polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites is described based on the ion beam patterning and pyrolysis. Thin films of PAN/GO nanocomposites formed by spin-coating on a SiO2-deposited Si wafer were selectively irradiated through a pattern mask with 150 keV H+ ions at various fluences ranging from 1x10(15) to 1x10(16) ions/cm(2), and subsequently developed with N, N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) to form PAN/GO patterns. The resulting PAN/GO patterns underwent a heat treatment process for the creation of CMs. Well-defined negative-type PAN/GO patterns were created at a fluence of 1x10(15) ions/cm(2), and they were pyrolyzed at 1000 degrees C without a significant shrinkage in the horizontal direction. The PAN/GO patterns were transformed into the graphitic CMs during the pyrolysis. Moreover, the formed CMs exhibited the GO content-dependent electrical conductivity in comparison to that of the pure PAN-derived CMs.
