Science fiction and horror in the 1950s

1950s horror films-frequently a blend of horror and science fiction-were first rediscovered in the Reagan era, but it has been post-9/11 America, first under Bush and then under Obama, that has seen a renaissance of the form. Any survey of what might loosely be termed cinematic fantasy during the 1950s is likely to turn up a number of films that will be listed either as science fiction or as horror. Much of the wartime propaganda displaying, and excusing, the sexual aggressiveness of the American soldier at home and abroad, is retroactively cast as a discourse of sexual anxiety over a beleaguered heterosexual masculinity. Films of the 1950s created “a paranoid style (and spectatorship) in which alien ‘difference’ was marked not [always] by special effects but by the wooden demeanor and small failures of the human-looking aliens to respond appropriately in ordinary human situations”. © 2014 John Wiley and Sons, Inc.
