중국의 지역 보호주의 및 산업구조 조정에 대한 一考察: 자동차 산업을 중심으로

This paper aims to evaluate the influence of local protectionism and assess the recent trend of restructuring and consolidation in fragmented industries of China by analyzing the degree of integration and consolidation in China’s automotive industry. The result of the analysis highlights that the fragmented industrial structure, both in terms of low level of concentration and high degree of geographical dispersal, which China bequeathed from the pre-reform planned economy era, sustained a tendency toward more fragmentation during the reform era. Specifically, number of firms engaged in the production of automobiles, already numerous at the beginning of the reform era, have continued to show increase during the period, accompanied by significant decline in the level of concentration and greater geographic dispersal of the industrial production. The fragmentation is a result of the local protectionism, the effect of which funnels resources to protect local industries even though it is not competitive. The argument has been supported by a statistical result that found no relationship between the marginal productivity of capital and new investment between regions.
