Green product design, which aims to improve a product’s environmental benefits and/or to reduce its environmental impacts through product design and development, was originally introduced in the early 1990s. One notable approach for green product design was the Design for the Environment (DfE) program initiated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1992. The United Nations Environmental Programme, Division of Technology Industry and Economics (UNEP) was also a key player in this field in producing publications and collaborate on product sustainability projects. Over the years, green product design has evolved from a cleaner production method to a comprehensive design approach for improving the sustainability performance of products including social, economic, and environmental elements (Clark et al. 2009). © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
