Radioactive contaminated water may come from the accident such as Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in 2011, from the laundry generated during the nuclear power plant operation, from contamination by other radioactive materials, and etc. This kind of contaminated water with low or very low level of radioactivity in large quantities needs novel decontamination methods. One of the decontamination methods is the decontamination system using microalgae which adsorb radionuclides. Currently we have been developing this biological decontamination system for the radioactive contaminated water. In the previous study, appropriate microalgae species and decontamination methods have been selected. Currently, the decontamination system has been designed and made a scale-down model of decontamination equipment, and performed operation confirmation tests and some experiments for deriving operation condition. This paper is about ideas and some characteristics of the micro-algae based decontamination equipment. © 2018 PBNC 2018 - Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference. All Rights Reserved.
