The Court Debate Over the 1637 Qing Invasion

In January 1637, the Manchu Qing invaded Chosŏn Korea, prompting the court to flee to Namhan Mountain Fortress. After 45 days, they surrendered to Emperor Hong Tai-ji. Despite their clear military inferiority, Chosŏn officials largely supported war. This chapter examines why they chose certain defeat, focusing on their deep commitment to the Ming–Chosŏn tributary and paternal relationship.
