Design and vibration analysis of a new optical disk with initial stress

In this paper, we suggest a new method to improve the vibration characteristics of current CD/DVD disks. The main idea is that initial stress is to be imposed within the optical disks by modifying the cooling process of injection molding. The effect of initial stress on the natural frequency spectrum and the critical speed of the initially stressed disks are calculated using an approximate method based on the Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The analytical predictions on the vibration characteristics are experimentally verified using test disks manufactured by the newly proposed injection molding. The experimental results show that the critical speed of the two nodal diameter mode shifts from 6800 rpm to 7400 rpm by imposing radial stress of 0.3 MPa.
