The Institutional Reception of Film and the Construction of Disciplinary Identity: A Comparative Study of Business Management and Industrial Engineering in the 1920s-1950s

초록

This study comparatively examines how films were institutionalized differently at Harvard Business School (HBS) and Purdue University between the 1920s and 1950s. At HBS, films became audiovisual aids for case study training in managerial judgment. In contrast, at Purdue, the same films functioned as experimental instruments that transformed human motion into measurable data. This divergence demonstrates that the films were not merely recording media but epistemic devices that shaped the visual conditions of modern rationality and helped constitute distinct disciplinary identities. HBS's interpretive rationality emphasized context and relationships, while Purdue's analytical rationality pursued measurement and optimization. The same medium performed fundamentally different epistemological functions across institutional boundaries, visually legitimizing the split between managerial and engineering expertise in twentieth-century American capitalism. Intersecting visual culture studies, history of science and technology, and histories of business and engineering, this research reveals that films were key mediators of knowledge production and power relations, providing a historical foundation for understanding contemporary digital visual regimes.
