‘Sentire cum Ecclesia’ as a key to the Synodalitas: Focusing on Pope Francis’s understanding

초록

This study argues that the meaning and value contained in the Latin motto ‘Sentire cum Ecclesia’, originating from Ignatius of Loyola, can offer inspiration and guidance for understanding and implementing synodality-the Church’s central mission and task in our time. It explores how Francis interprets ‘Sentire cum Ecclesia’ and how his understanding is intrinsically linked to the synodality he has consistently emphasized throughout his pontificate. Traditionally, ‘Sentire cum Ecclesia’ has generally been employed to describe the obedient and cooperative disposition expected of Church members toward their pastors or superiors. Such an interpretation has prevailed not only within the Society of Jesus but also among the faithful at large. In this perspective, ‘Sentire cum Ecclesia’ was often confined to the laity, religious, and lower clergy subordinated to the hierarchy-a view sustained by the outdated dichotomy between a ‘teaching Church’ and a ‘learning Church’. Francis, however, building on the ecclesiological vision of Vatican Council II and reflecting on his own pastoral experience, has broadened this understanding. He has shown that ‘Sentire cum Ecclesia’ entails not merely the attitude of the faithful toward ecclesial authority but also the disposition that pastors themselves must adopt toward the People of God, most of whom are laypersons. For Francis, who consistently underscores the importance of being among the People of God and journeying with them, ‘Sentire cum Ecclesia’ may rightly be described as ‘walking together with the People of God’, which naturally aligns with the meaning of synodality he has emphasized. As the International Theological Commission affirms that ‘Sentire cum Ecclesia’ is the key to ‘walking together’ of the People of God, this study contends that it can serve as a spiritual foundation for the Church’s synodal journey. This study offers a fresh interpretive framework by examining synodality through Francis’s reinterpretation of ‘Sentire cum Ecclesia’, arguing that synodality can be fruitfully understood within the horizon of ‘Sentire cum Ecclesia’.
