융합적 능력을 지닌 디자이너 양성을 위한 교육 내용 개발: 경영 교육을 중심으로

The purpose of this paper is to provide basic building blocks of education program for the development of T-shaped designers that many companies are pursuing. We investigated core capabilities and knowledge base to be an effective designer, focusing on management and marketing knowledge. We also investigated appropriate educational and training methods corresponding to the topics to be delivered. Data were collected by surveying 243 people working at design-related area, including design students, working-designers, managing-designers, and owner-designers. Result showed that the importance of core capabilities shifts as designer's career advances; design abilities and creativity are important at the beginning stage of designer's career; presentation skill, understanding of technology, and understanding of marker demand gain their importance during the mid-career, about seven years after they started career; and legal and financial knowledge are emphasized at the later stage of designer's career, about twenty years of career and after. Regarding educational institutions, it was recognized that college education is appropriate for the development of design skills, creativity, and presentation skills, while technology and marketing are suitable for graduate programs. In addition, business organization and legal issues are perceived to be developed at the workplace. With regard to educational methods, hands-on practice is appropriate for design skills and creativity; lecturing and seminar for financial, legal, and advertisement topics; and on-the-job training for organization, market, and technology issues. Among topics to be covered, the importance of marketing topics were more emphasized than management, finance, or strategy topics. We suggested an integrated example of teaching design management program for designer education.
