A study of factors affecting tourists to Japan using Text Mining Approach

초록

Japan’s tourism industry has been growing rapidly since overcoming a slump following the 2011 Tsunami. In this study, we investigate factors affecting the number of tourists to Japan. It is shown that Japan’s government policies, such as currency rates and Abenomics, positively relate with the tourism industry. Additionally, with the pervasiveness of the Internet and spread of mobile phones, accessibility to travel websites has become ubiquitous. In this paper, text mining technique with sentiment textual analysis is used to test the importance of positive reviews on the number of incoming visitors. Furthermore, adjustments were made, not only for seasonality and trend, but also for the effect of the 2011 Tsunami called tsunami effect. It is shown that the tsunami effect ends in February 2012, while Japan’s incoming tourism starts to increase in July 2012. As a result, it was found that both a low currency rate, and online reviews’ positive sentiment from a travel website affected the number of tourists to Japan favorably.
