Materials electrochemistry for dual-ion batteries

An urgent demand for high-energy-density rechargeable batteries initiated a fundamental study and development of next-generation rechargeable batteries; however, the currently designed rocking-chair battery architecture showed the limitations of available materials and electrochemistry. Therefore, out-of-box ideas to develop high-energy-density batteries are essential to driving the electrification of modern society. In this chapter, we disseminate the importance of dual-ion batteries, from their fundamental understanding to component design that is only but not limited to dual-ion storage. Pushing the operating voltage over 5.0V opens up a new can of worms and accordingly needs to treat the challenges from an entirely new perspective, which can be provided in this contribution. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
