Objective: We investigated the differences in BMI according to the fitness level and cardiovascular function in Korean women. Methods: The subjects included 9303 women, aged 20 to 81 years old, who visited a public health center for an inclusive medical and fitness test during 2006 to 2009. The diagnosis of BMI was made according to data in the WHO's Asia-Pacific standard report. Fitness assessment parameters including cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, power, agility, and balance were evaluated by VO(2)max (ml/kg/min), grip strength (kg), sit-ups (reps/min), sit and reach (cm), vertical jump (cm), side steps (reps/30s) and standing on one leg with eyes closed (sec), respectively. Cardiovascular assessment parameters included systolic blood pressure (mmHg), diastolic blood pressure (mmHg), resting heart rate (beats/min), double product (HR X SBP) and vital capacity (Ml). Results: Obese people, it means total population, had a lower fitness level judged by cardiorespiratory endurance (p<0.001), muscular endurance (p<0.001), flexibility (p<0.001), power (p<0.001), agility (p<0.001), balance (p<0.001) and have a higher fitness level, as judged by muscular strength (p<0.001), compared to normal people. Furthermore, obese people had low cardiovascular function as judged by SBP (p<0.001), DBP (p<0.001), double product (p<0.001) and vital capacity (p<0.001) expect resting heart rate (p=0.699). Conclusion: We concluded that obese people have a lower fitness level as measured by cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, flexibility, power, agility and balance, but have a higher fitness level as measured for muscular strength compared to normal people. Obese people also have low cardiovascular function and low vital capacity, including high blood pressure and double product in Korea.
