Confucianism and Modern Management Thoughts - Modern Leadership Theory

초록

This paper seeks to uncover the positive role of Confucianism by combining new interpretations of Confucianism with modern management thought. In the process of modernization or westernization in East Asia, Confucianism was interpreted as emphasizing subordination between the upper and lower levels and advocating several feudal ideologies. While this article agrees with the view that Confucianism essentially maintains a vertical interpersonal relationship, it argues that the ideals Confucian portrays are not necessarily dictatorships. The essence of Confucianism is to value individual discipline. Confucianism does not conflict with liberal democracy, which advocates individual freedom and democratic process, but is a complementary ideology against excessive liberalism and individualism, insisting that Confucianism has its own value. The author argues that modern management thought emphasizes inner virtue rather than pure competence skills, and emphasizes the collective spirit of win-win rather than victory in service and competition. In conclusion, Confucianism can make a great contribution to human society in the 21st century because it exactly matches the flow of these latest management ideologies.
