Smart contact lens for continuous colorimetric intraocular pressure monitoring

In this paper, we propose a smart contact lens for continuous monitoring intraocular pressure (IOP) based on visual color change without any external power sources such as battery and RF-based wireless power transfer. The photonic crystal (PC) based pressure sensor is embedded in the smart lens for colorimetric measurement, and high sensitivity is achieved by micro-hydraulic amplification. According to the sensor performance results, the IOP change can be detected with naked eyes and a smartphone camera can be used as quantitative IOP measurement system through the color change of the contact lens in a non-invasive manner without expensive optical spectrometers.
