The Haewol Sinsa Beopseol (The Teachings of Master Haewol) is a collection of essential sermons by Choe Si-hyeong (Haewol, 1827–1898), the second leader of Donghak. Building upon the foundational doctrines of the founder Suun, Haewol expanded the concept of Sicheonju (Serving God) into a practical philosophy of life known as Sain Yeocheon (Treating People as Heaven). In these teachings, Haewol elucidates that Heaven, Earth, and humanity are not separate entities but are interconnected through “One Vital Energy.” He redefines serving God not as abstract worship but as a practice realized through the “Three Reverences”: revering Heaven, revering people, and revering things. This radical worldview advocates for the equality of all people— transcending class and gender—and extends unconditional respect to all living beings and the natural world. This text serves as an enduring framework for “Serving Heaven and Earth and Parents” in everyday life, offering profound insights regarding human dignity and ecospirituality.
