The Storytelling Adaptation Patterns of Celtic Mythology

초록

This study aims to examine how Celtic mythology, which remains relatively unfamiliar to the Korean public, has been reproduced and consumed as a source of contemporary cultural content. Unlike Greek mythology, which has been transmitted through a well-established literary tradition, Celtic mythology survives primarily in fragmentary manuscripts transcribed by medieval Christian monks. Consequently, the mythological figures known today may differ considerably from those originally conceived by the ancient Celts. Drawing upon the framework established by Charles Squire(1919), this study reconstructs the major narratives of Celtic mythology and analyzes the patterns through which they have been transformed in contemporary Korean game-based cultural content. The findings indicate that, because the Celts left no indigenous written literary tradition, direct or faithful adaptations of the original narratives are virtually absent. Instead, contemporary games predominantly employ three modes of storytelling transformation: partial adaptation, total adaptation, and spin-off. These transformation strategies correspond closely to those commonly observed in adaptations of Greek and Roman mythology as well as modern literary works. The study further suggests that the fragmentary nature of Celtic mythological sources has encouraged creative reinterpretation rather than faithful reproduction, thereby shaping distinctive modes of cultural adaptation. By examining the Korean reception and transformation of Celtic mythology, this study provides a useful framework for understanding its adaptation in contemporary game culture and offers implications for the future development of Korean cultural content based on Celtic mythology.
